notes
Leland (Lee) Henriksen (USAF) and I (RAF) were stationed at Hickam AFB, Honolulu, Hawaii when we met in October 1961 and decided to form a duo with Lee on rhythm guitar and me on lead. Initially the music was mostly instrumentals influenced by Duane Eddy, The Ventures, Chet Atkins and The Shadows.
In December 1961 Lee & I were asked to play for a Christmas party at the Service Club on the base. The decision was made to temporarily add drums & bass to fill out the sound. We added Bobby Ayers/drums and Dick Bideo/bass (both Hawaiians). Needless to say, the sound was so full the group stayed as a foursome!
The Hawaiian Shadows were born.
In June 1962 Mel (Jet) Kanani/bass (Hawaiian) joined the band replacing Dick Bideo.
Sandy Windham (Hawaiian) became the band’s vocalist with the guys providing back up.
Later in ‘62 Bobby Ayers left and was replaced by Roy Jones/drums (USMC)
The band stayed with this line up until May 1964 when my tour of duty at Hickam ended and the RAF sent me back to England. With nine years left to serve in the RAF it appeared as though my time with the band was over. But, fortunately I was able to purchase my discharge (following a Parliamentary inquiry) and returned to Hawaii in August 1964 to rejoin the band.
During my absence Sandy Windham had left the band.
Also, Roy Jones had been replaced by Spud Ivens/drums (US Army).
Jet had spotted him playing in a jam session on Waikiki Beach with Dick Jensen a popular local Hawaiian singer.
The group played Waikiki Beach clubs including "Da Swamp", "The Morgue" and "The Peppermint Lounge" where we worked with Ted Neeley’s Band (before his leading role in "Jesus Christ Superstar"). Ted used his influence to help Lee, Jet, Spud and I to secure a gig in Portland, Oregon.
The Hawaiian Shadows finally left Hawaii in April 1965. It would be 13 years before they would return.
